Neurological Disease

Neurological Disease

Neurological diseases are disorders and conditions of the central nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord, and the peripheral nerves. Neurological diseases can range from mild to severe and affect various areas such as brain functioning, movement, sensations, and mood. Parkinson’s disease is one of the most common neurological conditions. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder resulting from damage to the brain’s dopamine pathways. Symptoms of Parkinson’s include tremors, slowed movement, difficulty walking, and stiffness of the body. Medications and different therapies can help manage some of these symptoms, but there is currently no cure for the disease. Multiple sclerosis is an immune-mediated disorder of the central nervous system where the body’s immune system attacks myelin, the substance that covers and protects the nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms of the disease are very varied, varying from person to person, but can include blurred vision, problems with balance, muscle spasms, and difficulty coordinating voluntary movements. Treatment options include disease-modifying drugs, physical therapy, and lifestyle changes to cope with the daily challenges of the disease. Epilepsy is a seizure disorder caused by changes in brain circuitry that cause electrical disturbances. It affects people of all ages and can be related to genetics or totrauma, such as a head injury or stroke. Symptoms of seizures can include body stiffening, jerking movements, loss of consciousness, and staring off into space. Although the cause of epilepsy is not well understood, medications are available to help manage the seizures associated with the disease. Neurological diseases can vary greatly in terms of severity and can have a wide range of effects on people’s lives. Proper diagnosis and treatment is essential to help those living with neurological diseases manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.
