Educational Psychology

Educational Psychology

Educational psychology is the branch of psychology that focuses on the understanding and application of psychological principles and techniques within the context of educational settings. Its primary goal is to support teachers, parents, administrators, and other professionals in understanding and improving the educational experiences and outcomes of students. At its core, educational psychology seeks to ensure that students are receiving the most effective and beneficial educational experience possible by uncovering new ways to assess and influence a student's development. To meet this goal, educational psychologists use research-based methods to investigate and analyze a wide range of variables that have the potential to affect student development and learning including cognitive, emotional, physical, and social. Educational psychologists strive to identify and develop the psychological resources within each student that can be used to maximize learning and growth both in and out of the classroom. For instance, educational psychologists often study the effect of different learning styles on a student's academic performance. Common learning styles include visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile. By recognizing the type of learner a student is, educators can use strategies such as creating visuals, using auditory reminders, and offering hands-on activities to help enhance the student's learning. In addition, educational psychologists focus on social and emotional development. Specifically, they often look at how the dynamics of a student’s relationships with peers and adults affect learning. Through the use of social skill interventions, educational psychologists aim to create an environment where students can feel comfortable opening up to their peers about their feelings and struggles. They also work to encourage empathy and respect among students. Ultimately, the primary function of educational psychology is to create an optimal learning environment where students can enjoy learning and ultimately reach their fullest potential. By combining research-based strategies and psychological techniques, educational psychologists are able to provide valuable insight into the educational experiences of students and help make sure they are obtaining the best possible education.
