Brain Disorders

Brain Disorders

Brain disorders can be any mental or physical abnormality that can affect the way that the brain functions. This includes a wide range of conditions ranging from mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety to physical disorders such as epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease. Severe brain disorders can drastically impact an individual’s life and may require long-term treatment and support in order to ensure that the patient can still live a normal, fulfilling life. One of the most common brain disorders is depression. This disorder is characterized by an extreme state of sadness and despair that interferes with the individual’s everyday life. Some symptoms of depression include feelings of guilt, loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities, persistent feelings of sadness, and changes in appetite, weight, and energy levels. Treatment for depression may include the use of medications, therapy, or a combination of both. Another form of mental illness is anxiety. This disorder can cause intense fear, panic, and worry that can interfere with everyday life. Symptoms of anxiety can include excessive worrying, difficulty concentrating, restlessness, and physical symptoms such as dizziness or headaches. Treatment for anxiety may include cognitive-behavioral therapy, exposure therapy, medication, or a combination of all three. Epilepsy is a physical disorder that affects the electrical activity of the brain. This disorder can cause seizures which can range from mild to severe. Lack of oxygen, head injuries, or other medical conditions may all lead to epilepsy. Treatment may include medications, lifestyle change, or a combination of both.
