A brain abscess is a localized collection of pus found within the brain tissue that is typically diagnosed and expressed as a widening mass or lesion. While the formation of an abscess can cause severe neurological deficits or death, successful treatment of a brain abscess is possible. The symptoms associated with a brain abscess are indicative of a localized infection process in the brain. These symptoms may include headache, fever, vomiting, seizure, confusion, drowsiness, and weakness or paralysis in certain areas of the body. A CT scan of the brain is able to confirm the presence of a brain abscess, and MRI scans can further detail its exact size and composition. The causes of a brain abscess may include spread of an infection from a distant area of the body or, more commonly, the translocation of bacteria or fungi from the nose or sinuses. Traumatic injuries to the brain and the expansion of infection from teeth or bones are also potential causes of a brain abscess. Treatment of a brain abscess typically involves a combination of antibiotics and surgical drainage. Antibiotics are necessary to eliminate the bacterial or fungal infection that is causing the abscess. Surgery is used to drain the fluid in the abscess, relieving the pressure and allowing the antibiotic to focus on eliminating the infection from the surrounding healthy tissue. Corticosteroids, such as dexamethasone, may also be used to reduce swelling and inflammation associated with the abscess. Follow-up treatment typically includes monitoring of the abscess to ensure that it is not expanding or contracting. In some cases, an additional course of antibiotics may be necessary if the infection is still active. Surgery may be considered if the abscess does not adequately respond to medical treatment. Due to the potential seriousness of a brain abscess, it is important to recognize the signs and symptoms and seek medical attention. With proper diagnosis and prompt treatment, the negative effects of a brain abscess on neurological functioning can be minimized.
